Virat Kohli has truly owned the World Cup with both hands to deliver back-to-back performances for the Men in Blue. However, in this edition of the World Cup, Kohli is chasing a special milestone of his own. King Kohli is looking to reach the 50th ODI century to surpass the record of the great cricketing legend of India, Sachin Tendulkar.

Earlier in the day, Team India got to a dream start as they scored 84 runs for the loss of just one wicket. Captain Rohit Sharma put the men in blue in the driving seat with his blistering knock. Subsequently, after the fall of the first wicket, the onus had been on Kohli and Gill to steer the innings. Unfortunately, Gill had to retire hurt due to cramps. Since then, it has been a show of Kohli and Shreyas Iyer who have blasted the Kiwis to all corners of Wankhede. Moreover, Kohli even notched up his 50th ODI century in the process.

Virat’s ODI milestone

India’s Virat Kohli broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most runs in an ODI World Cup. Virat broke this majestic record during his side’s semifinal clash against New Zealand on Wednesday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Kohli went past Sachin’s mark of 673 runs, achieved in the 2023 edition, with a single against Glenn Phillips. Earlier in the match, the 35-year-old Kohli became only the third Indian batter to score 600+ runs in a single World Cup.

However, the main record on the eyes of Kohli will be to breach the record of 49 centuries set by Sachin Tendulkar. Subsequently, with a 135 km/h ball from Lockie Ferguson, Kohli whips it away to deep backward square leg and comes back for the second. In the process, Kohli surpassed the record of the man he idolizes the most. Not only did he reach this remarkable landmark in front of his cricketing idol, but he’s also done it at the same venue where he carried the great man on his shoulders after the 2011 WC triumph. He’s also bowing down to Tendulkar now.

Most ODI hundreds:
50 – Virat Kohli
49 – Sachin Tendulkar
31 – Rohit Sharma
30 – Ricky Ponting
28 – Sanath Jayasuriya
