The cricketing world witnessed an ugly scene in Bangladesh during a local club game. During the Dhaka Premier Division game between Mohammedan Sporting and Abahani Limited, Shakib Al Hasan lost his cool not once but twice. In one instance, Shakib appealed for an LBW against Mushfiqur Rahim but the umpire turned it down. Furious, Shakib then kicked at the stumps and then argued with the umpires. When the officials decided to take the players off due to rain, Shakib grew even angrier.

The Bangladesh star all-rounder uprooted a whole set of them and flung them to the ground. Later on, he was also having an argument with Khaled Mahmud, the Abahani coach and the BCB director. After the match, Shakib apologized on his Facebook page. “An experienced player like me should not have reacted that way but sometimes against all odds it happens unfortunately. I apologise to the teams, management, tournament officials and organizing committee for this human error. Hopefully, I won’t be repeating this again in the future,” Shakib wrote.

However, this is not the first time that Shakib has been involved in controversy. Here is a list

‘Inappropriate gesture’ in 2014 Asia Cup

During an Asia Cup 2014 game against Sri Lanka, Shakib scratched his crotch and the gesture was shown live on television. The incident occurred when TV commentators began describing Shakib’s dismissal during the match. The camera panned to the viewing area of the Bangladesh team. After several seconds, while replays of his dismissal were broadcast, Shakib gestured towards his crotch and then towards the camera. The broadcasters didn’t show the Bangladesh viewing area for the rest of the match. Shakib was fined USD 3800 and was suspended for three ODIs.

Nidahas Trophy outburst by Shakib Al Hasan

In the game between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the 2018 Nidahas Trophy tri-series, ugly scenes erupted in Colombo. Shakib was angry at the umpire’s decision of not calling a no-ball after Lankan pacer Isuru Udana bowled back to back shoulder-high bouncers to the Bangladesh batsmen. Though the leg-umpire called the no-ball, it was ignored by the umpire at the bowler’s end. He got into an altercation with the umpire and then threatened to take the team off the field. Officials calmed the situation down and requested that the game resume. Bangladesh entered the final with Mahmudullah hitting a six off the second-last ball. After the match, visuals emerged of broken glass in the Bangladesh dressing room.

Bangladesh Premier League argument

In the 2015 Bangladesh Premier League, Shakib had one more meltdown. It was a game between Rangpur Riders and Sylhet Superstars in Mirpur. Sylhet had to chase 110 and were struggling at 64/5 in the 13th over. In the chase, Mushfiqur Rahim had apparently edged a delivery. Shakib appealed. However, the on-field umpire Tanvir Ahmed did not consider the appeal. This made Shakib hurl abuses at the umpire. Shakib was handed a one-match suspension.

Shakib Al Hasan gets banned for not reporting corrupt approaches

Perhaps the most serious of Shakib’s offence. In the year 2019, Shakib Al Hasan was banned for one year by the ICC for failing to report corrupt approaches. Shakib accepted three charges of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. This included the failure to report one corrupt approach during the Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Afghanistan tri-series. In the IPL 2019 clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings, Shakib did not reveal an approach by a bookie and that further landed him in hot water. Shakib totally accepted his sanction and Bangladesh were without him for nearly a year. After that, he made his comeback in the series against West Indies.

Dhaka Premier League division meltdown

Losing his cool twice has not made life any easier for Shakib. After apologizing on Facebook, Shakib’s wife Umme released a statement. “I’m enjoying this incident as much as the media is, finally some news on TV! It is great to see the support of the people who can see the clear picture of today’s incident at least someone has the guts to stand against all odds. The main issue is the ongoing eye-catching decisions of the umpires! The headlines are really saddening. To me, it is a plot against him that has been going on for a while to portray him as the villain in all circumstances! If you are a cricket lover beware of your actions,” Umme said.
