The IPL 2021 match between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals was a bad day in the office for Rohit Sharma. The five-time champions suffered a loss against Delhi Capitals for the first time after four games. On a Chepauk track where Mumbai Indians had played three matches, Delhi Capitals showed remarkable adaptability to come up with a major win against a side that had dominated them in IPL 2020.

As if the loss was not enough, Rohit was also fined for maintaining a slow over-rate. In a statement released by the IPL, since it was Rohit’s first offence under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, he was fined Rs 12 lakh.  Another transgression will cost Rohit Rs 24 lakh while a third-time offence could see him getting banned.

Not able to capitalise on starts

Mumbai Indians have suffered a peculiar trend when they have played in IPL. The middle order has not been able to capitalise on the starts. The five-time champions have also collapsed at vital times, as witnessed in the game against Kolkata Knight Riders. Rohit stressed on the need for the batsmen to step up and take more responsibility.

“After the start we got we should have batted better in the middle overs. It is happening time and again. We aren’t able to capitalize on our starts and we need to understand as a batting unit,” Rohit said.

The Mumbai Indians skipper also credited the Delhi Capitals bowlers for maintaining good discipline despite the dew factor. “You have to give credit to the Delhi bowlers, they kept it tight and kept taking wickets. We knew dew would come in but we have seen that it’s not all that difficult to grip the ball in the last few games. Dew isn’t the factor; we need to play smart cricket to win games which we didn’t do today,” Rohit said.

Mumbai Indians will take on Punjab Kings on April 23. Delhi Capitals will play Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday.
