Amit Mishra was in fine form for the Delhi Capitals (DC) against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Tuesday (April 20). In their IPL 2021 encounter, the veteran leg-spinner shone bright as DC restricted MI to just 137-9 after Rohit Sharma opted to bat first having won the toss first. In a match that pitted last year’s finalists against one another, the first innings definitely belonged to last years runners-up. That was down largely to Mishra, whose spin bowling was both economical and effective. He got rid of not one, not two but three key batsmen in the vaunted MI batting line-up.

Mishra’s first wicket was a player he has had some joy against in the past: Rohit Sharma. The MI skipper had been dismissed 6 times by Mishra prior to this match.

Mishra made sure to make it 7 times when he got rid of Rohit, who was looking dangerous at the time. He tempted Rohit with a flighted delivery and the opener duly obliged, taking him on.

However, Rohit didn’t manage to get to the pitch of the ball entirely but still went through with the lofted shot. All he could do was pick out Steve Smith at long-on.

Mishra repeated the trick just two balls later, this time against Hardik Pandya. He lofted one just wide outside off and Pandya backed himself to go big.

But he couldn’t generate sufficient power on the shot and only found Smith at long-on. MI were four down and staring at the barrel of a low score.

Mishra then got rid of Kieron Pollard in his third and final over. Pollard hit and missed a wrong one and the ball duly rapped into his pads.

The umpire gave him out and Pollard, somewhat surprisingly, took the review. It was umpire’s call but that meant the West Indies white-ball skipper had to walk.

Mishra finished things off by getting rid of Ishan Kishan just when he was beginning to find some momentum. He went wide and loopy again but Kishan only managed to chop it on to the stumps.

Mishra would end the night with figures of 4-24, which is the best-ever figures for a Delhi Capitals bowler against Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

DC are currently third in the IPL 2021 standings, with MI behind them on fourth.
