Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are on a roll, having registered their third consecutive triumph in an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 league match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The Bangalore-based franchise has won its opening three league games, against defending champions Mumbai Indians, SunRisers Hyderabad and now KKR. They are now comfortably leading the IPL 2021 points table, having accumulated six points from three matches. What makes it even more special is the fact that RCB have now registered their best ever start in the history of the cash-rich league. The Bangalore-based franchise has never won its opening three games in any season of the IPL previously.

RCB started off on a poor note after being sent in to bat. They lost the wickets of Virat Kohli (5) and Rajat Patidar (1) in the second over of the innings. Varun Chakravarthy was the bowler who accounted for these dismissals. At this stage, Glenn Maxwell joined Devdutt Padikkal at the crease, with the duo reviving the RCB innings.

Maxwell continued his impressive run for RCB, scoring a 49-ball 78. AB de Villiers provided some fine support at the other end, with another turbo-charged half-century, smashing 55 runs out of the 70 in the last five overs that led RCB to 204/4. On a dry, sluggish pitch in Chennai, these contributions were vital for the team. The bowlers got the job done at this stage, accounting for wickets at regular intervals.

Maxwell and Harshal Patel have turned out to be arguably the two best additions for RCB this season. While the Australian has made the No.4 spot in the batting order his own with game-changing contributions, Patel is relishing his role as a death-overs specialist. He may not have the pace but makes up for it with cricketing intelligence.
