Veteran Bangladesh batsman Mohammad Mahmudullah was born on 4 February 1986. He is also known as Riyad. He is also the current T20I captain of the national team. Veteran Bangladesh batsman Mohammad Mahmudullah was born on 4 February 1986. He is also known as Riyad. He is also the current T20I captain of the national team. He has played First-class and List A cricket for Dhaka Division and has played for Bangladesh in all forms of the game. When did Mahmudullah make his International debut?

He made his ODI debut on 25th July 2007 against Sri Lanka. He made his T20I debut on 1st September 2007 vs Kenya whereas his Test debut came against West Indies on 9 July 2009.

Domestic and T20 career

He has played in National Cricket League, Bangladesh Premier League, Pakistan Super League, Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, Bangabandhu T20 Cup as well. During the 2008-2009 Bangladeshi domestic season, he finished as the second-highest run-getter in the tournament with 710 runs at an average of 54.61. In 2012, he was bought by the Chittagong Kings for $110,000 for Bangladesh Premier League.

In October 2018, he was added to the squad for the Khulna Titans team for Bangladesh Premier League. In November 2019, he played for the Chattogram Challengers in the 2019–20 Bangladesh Premier League as well. In the 2017 Pakistan Super League, Mahmudullah was signed by Quetta Gladiators. In April 2021, Multan Sultans signed him to play in the rescheduled matches in the 2021 Pakistan Super League as well.

In the 2017-18 Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, Mahmudullah became the highest-paid cricketer after Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club signed him. Moreover, he played for Gemcon Khulna in the 2020-21 Bangabandhu T20 Cup and led the team to a win in the first edition of the tournament.

International Career

After having made his debut, he became Bangladesh's second-highest scorer (with 36) and also took 2 wickets, in the second game against Sri Lanka. In his Test debut, he registered the best test bowling figures with an eight-wicket haul, including a five-wicket haul in the second innings as well. His bowling helped Bangladesh's second Test win and the first on overseas as well

Mahmudullah scored a Test century while batting at number 8 against New Zealand. He was added to Bangladesh's 15-member squad for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. On 20 September 2011, Mahmudullah was appointed as Bangladesh's vice-captain. Meanwhile, on 9th March 2015, in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, against England, he smashed the first century by a Bangladeshi batsman in the history of the World Cup.

However, Bangladesh won the match and qualified for the quarterfinals. In the next match, on 13 March, he again scored a World Cup hundred, although this time New Zealand won by 3 wickets. In six matches of the World Cup, he scored 365 runs which came at an average of 73.00 and eventually became the highest run-getter for Bangladesh in the league as well.

He also smashed a century against New Zealand in the Quarterfinals for the semi-final berth. In that same match, he and Shakib Al Hasan made the record for the highest 5th wicket partnership in ICC Champions Trophy history with a whopping 224-run partnership. It was also the highest stand for any wicket for Bangladesh as well.

In January 2018, during the Bangladesh Tri-series final against Sri Lanka, Mahmudullah was named as captain of the Test team. Soon he led the team in the T20I, recorded their highest total in T20Is (193/5) but eventually lost the match for Sri Lanka in Tri-nation Series in Bangladesh as well.

In July 2021, he played the one-off Test against Zimbabwe, after a gap of 17 months which was his 50th test match and smashed an unbeaten 150 runs, his career-best in the first innings and making a 191-run stand with Taskin Ahmed for the ninth wicket. It was the highest score for Bangladesh, helping Bangladesh to win the test match by 220 runs as well. However, he announced his retirement from Test cricket after that. On 20 July 2021, during the tour of Zimbabwe, the veteran had played in his 200th ODI match. In September 2021, he was named as the captain of the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup squad.
