Toiling in the domestic circuit can often be a 50-50 situation for many players. Some get noticed. Some don’t. Toiling in the domestic circuit can often be a 50-50 situation for many players. Some get noticed. Some don’t. But, Dasun Shanaka had the good end of the scale when he was considered for selection in the Sri Lanka national cricket team. He had impressed and caught the eyes of the selectors in a big way in a domestic T20 competition. In two matches, Shanaka had hit 123 off 46 balls and 131 off 48 balls. In one of the knocks, Shanaka hit 16 sixes which remains a record in Sri Lanka.
Those exploits in 2016 had given Dasun Shanaka the license to make his international debut. On a green top against India in Pune, Shanaka bowled a brilliant spell of 3/16 to give Sri Lanka a rare T20I win against India. Combining the right lengths and superb seam presentation, Dasun Shanaka troubled all players as he made a massive impression.
When Sri Lanka toured South Africa, it was his brilliant 65 off 34 balls with five sixes that helped Sri Lanka snap an 11-game losing streak against the Proteas. Such has been his contribution to Sri Lanka that he is already the ODI and T20I captain of the Sri Lanka side. Although results have not gone his way, Dasun Shanaka might provide Sri Lanka the balance that is needed in their period of transition.
Dasun Shanaka made his Test debut against England in Leeds while his ODI debut was against Ireland in Malahide. His T20I debut was against Pakistan in Colombo in 2015.
Dasun Shanaka has not played in any IPL team till now. During the 2022 IPL Mega Auction, his base price was Rs 50 lakhs but he did not get a bid.
Dasu Shanaka’s initial years were difficult as he struggled with both bat and ball. But, the Pune T20I in 2016 made the world sit up and see potential in Dasun Shanaka. His batting got the right rewards when he blasted 65 off 34 balls against South Africa. An aggressive medium-pacer all-rounder is a rarity in Sri Lanka and basically in the sub-continent. But, in the coming years, with some senior players not available due to form and fitness, Dasun Shanaka might be the right captain to guide Sri Lanka through choppy waters.
