Shubman Gill’s potential appearance in the forthcoming Cricket World Cup showdown between India and Pakistan on October 14 appears to be uncertain. The batsman has apparently been hospitalized in Chennai due to his ongoing health issues. Although the Indian cricket team has had a promising start in the World Cup 2023 against Australia, they are still missing key players. Shubman Gill, who had recently contracted dengue, remains unavailable due to his health condition. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already ruled him out for India’s second match against Afghanistan. Furthermore, it has come to light that Gill was admitted to a hospital in Chennai due to a low platelet count.

Reportedly, Gill’s progress is under close observation by the BCCI medical team. However, his return to the field is currently uncertain. His platelet count has been consistently low, leading to his hospitalization in Chennai. Nonetheless, it is expected that he will be discharged once his platelet count exceeds 100,000, a critical threshold for dengue patients. A BCCI source revealed, “Shubman Gill was receiving intravenous treatment at the Chennai team hotel for the past few days. However, his platelet count dropped to 70,000, and as is the protocol for dengue patients, once the count falls below 100,000, hospital admission is necessary as a precautionary measure.”

Gill was reportedly admitted to Chennai’s multi-care specialty hospital ‘Kauvery,’ and the Indian team’s doctor, Dr. Rizwan, is closely monitoring his recovery.

The BCCI confirmed Gill’s unavailability for the upcoming match, stating, Team India opener Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on October 9, 2023. The opening batsman, who missed the team’s first match in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai, is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on October 11. He will remain in Chennai under medical supervision.

Not many members of the Indian team have had the opportunity to visit Gill since their arrival in Chennai ahead of the Australia match. The BCCI is cautiously optimistic about Gill’s availability for the Pakistan match scheduled for October 14. However, his return to the field might be challenging given the short time frame and his recent battle with dengue.

Should Gill’s condition improve, there is a possibility that he could be flown directly to Ahmedabad in preparation for the Pakistan clash. Nevertheless, proving his match fitness in such a brief period following a bout of dengue remains a significant challenge.
