England, the reigning champions, faced a devastating blow as they failed to defend their total in a stunning turn of events. Absent from the New Zealand lineup were key figures such as Kane Williamson, Tim Southee, and Lockie Ferguson, but this did not hinder their performance. The contemporary New Zealand team showcased their depth and quality. Matt Henry, a quality bowler, stepped up when Trent Boult struggled with the new ball. Tom Latham, a quality captain, successfully filled the shoes of Kane Williamson, while Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway, quality batters, effortlessly turned a challenging chase into a walk in the park.

The standout performers, Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway, were instrumental in New Zealand’s comfortable chase of 283 runs. Their stellar partnership of 273 runs left the English team without a breakthrough. Ravindra, batting at no. 3, displayed his brilliance with a maiden century, filling the void left by Kane Williamson’s absence. Meanwhile, Conway notched his third century in the last six ODI innings. Throughout the match, the left-handed duo handled spin and pace adeptly. England’s pace bowler Mark Wood struggled, Chris Woakes seemed out of sorts, and Sam Curran’s change of pace was anticipated. Spinners were neutralized through precise rotation of strike.

In the earlier stages, Jonny Bairstow’s six on the second ball set the tone for England, while Dawid Malan had a less graceful performance. Henry ended Malan’s scratchy innings during the powerplay. England did manage periodic partnerships in the middle, with all their batters reaching double-digit scores, a World Cup first. Despite a brisk start, England’s progress was impeded by Tom Latham’s brilliant bowling changes. Mitch Santner and Glenn Phillips also contributed by tightening the screws on England’s scoring. Jos Buttler and Joe Root steadied the ship with a 70-run partnership for the fifth wicket, with Root impressively scoring 77 off 86 balls. However, Latham’s constant rotation of bowlers prevented England from accelerating in the final overs, leaving them with a total of 283-9.
