Merv Hughes was a big-hearted fast bowler who contributed significantly to Australia’s fortunes. He was a crowd favourite with an imposing run-up and delivery action, a classic fast bowlers’ glare down the pitch, a mischievous sense of humour, and an incredible moustache. While his antics occasionally overshadowed his bowling, Hughes gave his country his all and helped it re-climb the ranks of Test cricket. Hughes made a relatively low-key debut in the mid-1980s. In the second Test, he lost pace partner Geoff Lawson to a broken jaw. Hughes picked a hat-trick in that game, but his performance – 13 for 217 off 73.1 overs – demonstrated his ability.

For the 1993 Ashes trip, when bowling partner Craig McDermott could not play due to a twisted bowel, Hughes saved his best series effort. Hughes contributed to Australia’s 4-1 triumph against England in the six Test matches by taking 31 wickets from about 300 overs. After suffering a severe knee injury during the series, Hughes finished his career with 212 wickets and only briefly returned to the field in tests the following summer.
