Virat Kohli’s quest to reclaim the title of the world’s No.1 ranked ODI player has gained significant traction, with the Indian cricket sensation making substantial progress in the latest MRF Tyres ODI Player Rankings update. Having amassed an impressive 765 runs in the recent ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Kohli ascended one place to secure the third position in the latest rankings, trailing teammate Shubman Gill by a mere 35 rating points. Gill, with 826 rating points, maintains a slim lead at the summit of the batter rankings, closely pursued by Pakistan captain Babar Azam with 824 points. Kohli (791) and India captain Rohit Sharma (up one spot to fourth with 769 rating points) are now well within striking distance following their stellar performances in the World Cup.

Kohli’s outstanding achievement of scoring a century on three occasions during the World Cup surpassed former teammate Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI centuries. Meanwhile, Rohit’s exceptional form saw him amass 597 runs, making the India duo the top two run-scorers in the tournament. Despite Gill’s reasonable output of 354 runs and Babar’s 320 runs as Pakistan fell short of the knockout stages, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma capitalized on the opportunity to challenge for the top ranking. Kohli had previously held the No.1 ranking for an impressive 1258 consecutive days, reigning supreme for nearly four years from 2017 to 2021. Babar had occupied the premier position until Gill’s rise during the World Cup.

This surge by the Indian duo resulted in South Africa opener Quinton de Kock slipping to fifth place in the ODI batter rankings, while New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell climbed five spots to sixth after his noteworthy 552 runs at the World Cup. A noteworthy development in the updated ODI batter rankings is Australia’s Travis Head, who leaped a remarkable 28 places to secure the 15th spot overall following his outstanding century and Player of the Match performance in the World Cup final.

On the bowling front, South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj maintains his lead in the ODI bowler rankings. Australia’s successful World Cup campaign saw seamer Josh Hazlewood rise four places to second overall, Mitchell Starc climb eight spots to 12th, and captain Pat Cummins improve seven places to 27th. India’s Mohammed Siraj (third) and Jasprit Bumrah (fourth) continue to be firmly situated within the top 10 for ODI bowlers, while Kuldeep Yadav drops one spot to share the sixth position.

The top 10 of the ODI rankings for all-rounders witnessed minimal changes post the World Cup, with Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan maintaining a substantial lead at the forefront. New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner dropped two spots to seventh, and Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan Miraz ascended two places to ninth.
