New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will be taking over as the skipper of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the remainder of the ongoing 2021 edition. Williamson replaces Australian cricketer David Warner, under whom the Hyderabad-based franchise won the 2016 edition of the cash-rich league. This decision by SRH was announced by the franchise on social media platform Twitter, in the form of a press release.

“SunRisers Hyderabad would like to announce that Kane Williamson will be taking over the captaincy for tomorrow’s match and for the remainder of IPL 2021. The team management has also made the decision that they will be changing their overseas combination for tomorrow’s match against Rajasthan Royals. This decision has not come lightly as the management respects the enormous impact David Warner has had for the franchise over a number of years. As we face the remainder of the season we are sure David will continue to help us strive for success both on and off the field,” read the message from the Hyderabad-based franchise.

SRH have failed to make their presence felt in IPL 2021, currently featuring on the last spot in the points table. The Hyderabad-based franchise has recorded only one win in six matches played so far. They have a net run-rate of -0.264, which is certainly an area of concern for the fans considering the close competition for a spot in the playoffs. SRH are the only team to have recorded only win in the ongoing edition.

Warner has been the second-highest run-getter for the Hyderabad-based franchise in IPL 2021. The Australian opener has accumulated 193 runs in six matches, at a strike rate of 110.28. The decision to relieve him of the burden of captaincy may have been motivated by the desire, to witness him batting freely. Warner looked under a lot of pressure in the previous league match against Mumbai Indians (MI), which had an impact on the team’s final score.

SRH will be next seen locking horns with Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Sunday. It will be interesting to note the overseas player combinations for the Hyderabad-based franchise, considering the availability of a quality opener like Jason Roy.
