Kane Williamson and Super Overs are a match definitely not made in heaven. The 2019 ICC World Cup final loss to England was the ultimate pain for him. After the match against Delhi Capitals which saw Sunrisers Hyderabad lose in a Super Over, Williamson admitted that he ‘was tired of coming second best’ in Super Overs. Sunrisers Hyderabad were boosted by a brilliant knock of 66 from Williamson but suffered a loss yet again. This was the sixth time that Williamson was part of a losing side in the Super Overs.

Be it for New Zealand or in the IPL, Williamson has never had success in the Super Over. In IPL 2019, Sunrisers Hyderabad fell short against Mumbai Indians in a pulsating encounter. In 2020, against the Kolkata Knight Riders in Dubai, Williamson was undone by a superb spell from Lockie Ferguson. Earlier in the year, New Zealand lost two consecutive Twenty20 Internationals in the Super Over against India as they were whitewashed 5-0.

The loss against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021 was his sixth Super Over loss in the last two years. Speaking after the match, Williamson stated, “It is a game of very small margins and I think, if we are being honest, we just want to do different aspects of our game a bit better. This game, if you are able to do it, then the result can change quite quickly. I suppose when it ends in a tie, you can look at the one run throughout the whole innings. I think on the whole, a lot of positives.”

‘Did not bat well in the middle overs’

David Warner, the Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper, said the brilliance of Jonny Bairstow and Williamson at the top was cancelled by poor batting in the middle overs. Bairstow gave an excellent start but Sunrisers Hyderabad lost wickets at crucial times.

“Jonny at the top of the order and Kane taking it deep, we couldn’t bat well in the middle overs. They bowled well in the middle and made it challenging for us. If you hit the ball to a world class fielder, you are going to get run out 9 times out of 10,” Warner remarked.
