Pat Cummins has become the most expensive player in the history of IPL to be sold at 20 cr and thereby overtaken the record of Sam Curran.
Australian captain Pat Cummins became the most expensive player in the history of the Indian Premier League. The World Cup-winning captain was sold for Rs 20.50 crore after an intense battle of bids between the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bangalore. The inclusion of Cummins will be an added asset to the leadership skills of Hyderabad. Moreover, Cummins will also be the lead bowler for the fearsome bowling lineup of Sunrisers.
SRH were looking for a player with leadership quality in the bowling department that had been left wanting in the last two seasons. Cummins guided Australia to title wins in the World Test Championship 2023 and then the ODI World Cup in November. The bowler had put in a fantastic show in the ODI WC Final in Ahmedabad and had picked up the wickets of Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli that derailed the Indian innings. While Cummins’ T20 bowling has not always been up to the mark; the fast bowler has consistently fetched high-value in IPL. Back in the 2019 auction, Pat Cummins had been bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for a mega-sum of Rs 15.50 crore.
In the fearsome bidding process that raged on for the current Aussie skipper; Cummins also broke the record of Sam Curran. Sam was sold to the Chennai Super Kings a couple of years back with a whopping price of 18.5 cr. Now that sum also looks tiny in front of the Australian skipper’s value. Moreover, Cummins will join his teammate Travis Head in the Eagles’ dugout. Head was bought for Rs 6.8 crore earlier in the auction. These bold buys from SRH show a change of plans in Hyderabad and how are they seeing the team’s progress. SRH’s buys indicate a change of personnel in all departments of the team. It is expected that SRH will have a rejig in their preferred playing line-up as well.
