The respected former Indian cricket coach Anil Kumble recently suggested an idea to address unfairness at the 2024 IPL auction. With 77 open spots across the teams and over 300 players hoping to fill them, he wants the league to divide team budgets. Since squads have 8 foreign players out of 25, he thinks 1/3 of funds should go to them. By separating local and overseas player money, Kumble believes teams can build more balanced rosters. Rather than a free-for-all auction, his proposal aims for fairness.

Kumble stressed the need to create a separate overseas player fund. This would help fill gaps in the squad and prevent limited options for foreign talent. Such disparities of 50-60% in pay across the team pose risks. With eight Indian players now in the playing eleven, this change would benefit them, Kumble said, especially in smaller auctions. He admitted his idea may not please overseas fans. Yet, he feels it vital to ensure fairness and set overseas player pay benchmarks.

The 2024 IPL auction has sparked much guessing, especially about the highest bid for foreign players. Bidding can start as low as Rs 2 crore, but Kumble doubts any player will top Rs 20 crore. Big names and promising prospects fill the pool, possibly sparking bidding frenzies. As all watch the auction, there is expectation for bold roster moves and teams spending big to get their targets.

The IPL auction often sees intense bidding and speculation over player salaries, especially for overseas talent. To promote balance, Anil Kumble has suggested allocating one-third of a team’s purse for up to eight foreign players out of a 25-player squad. This proposal intends to prevent major pay gaps and encourage more equitable recruitment. As teams prepare for 2024, many await the next auction with curiosity over overseas player compensation.
