The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have reportedly confirmed the retention rules for all the Indian Premier League teams ahead of the mega auction for the 2022 season. IPL is all set to become a ten- team tournament for the 2022 season. IPL teams can retain up to 4 players in the lead up to the auction. The two new teams who will be part of the next season will be allowed to pick 3 players before the auction.

BCCI is conducting the mega auction inorder to give the two new teams a fair chance to build a strong squad from scratch. As per a report in Cricbuzz, all the existing eight IPL teams will be allowed a maximum of four retentions while the two new teams will be allowed to pick three players before the mega auction. There will be no Right to Match (RTM) option this time around.

As per a report in India Today, the 8 existing teams cannot retain more than three Indian players (capped or uncapped) while they can’t retain more than two overseas players. Meanwhile the two new teams can pick two Indian players after the players are retained by the existing teams. No more than one uncapped player can be picked by them.

The maximum purse for all 8 teams has been fixed at Rs 90 crore each. If a team retains 4 players, then a total of Rs 42 crore will be deducted from their purse with the top player getting Rs 15 crore. If a team retains 3 players, then Rs 33 crore will be cut from its purse. For 2 players it would be 14 crore and Rs 10 crore have to be shelled out while teams retaining only one player have to pay Rs 14 crore to him.

Ahmedabad and Lucknow are the two new teams

Ahmedabad and Lucknow are the two new teams for the IPL 2022. CVC Capitals Partners and Sanjiv Goenka’s RPSG Group successfully bid for the franchises in Dubai’s Taj Hotel. RPSG group picked Lucknow as their home base with a winning bid of RS 7090 crore while CVS Capitals Partners have opted for Ahmedabad with a bid of Rs 5625 crore.

Previously, the 2010 edition of IPL also featured 10 teams. Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala joined the tournament before both sides were terminated. In 2015 it added  Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions – for the 2016 and 2017 editions as replacements for the then suspended Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals teams.
