Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma praised his side for an “excellent fightback” against Kolkata Knight Riders. He further added that one doesn’t get to see these kind of close games very often. Mumbai Indians came back strongly in the last 10 overs of the IPL 2021 match at Chennai on Tuesday to defend a meagre total of 152 against KKR, who managed only 20 runs in the last five overs.

“It was an excellent fightback by each one of them. You don’t see a game like this often. We will take lots of confidence from this game as we move forward,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

The MI skipper said that them going away with the win was a ‘complete team effort’ on a difficult Chepauk track.

“KKR batted brilliantly in the Powerplay. But Rahul (Chahar) came and got us crucial wickets in the middle. And Krunal (Pandya) bowling those overs at the end was vital as well.

“It was a complete team effort and credit to all the bowlers. As batters, you need to carry on. The trend in Chennai is you can’t hit from ball one. You have to plan before you go into bat. We were 15-20 runs short,” he said.

Chasing a target of 153, KKR were 122-4 in the 15th over and were therefore on course to record an easy win. However, the last five fetched only 20 runs as they stunningy fell short of the target. Thus, this gave the defending champions their first win of the IPL 2021.

Krunal Pandya (1/13 in 4 overs) and Chahar (4/27 in 4 overs) helped Mumbai claw back into the game after a 72-run opening stand between Nitish Rana (57 off 47 balls) and Shubman Gill (33 off 24 balls).

Then it was Jasprit Bumrah (0/28) and Trent Boult (2/27) who stemmed the flow of runs at the death and kept both Andre Russell and Dinesh Karthik quiet.
