Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has delivered a crucial update to his fans, sharing that he successfully underwent surgery on his Achilles tendon. Using the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the cricket star conveyed optimism about his recovery journey, recognizing that it will require some time. Shami’s absence from the home T20I series against Australia, the South Africa tour, and the ongoing Test series against England has been attributed to his Achilles tendon issues.

The 33-year-old, who last participated for India in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November, emerged as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, securing an impressive 24 wickets in just 7 matches. Despite grappling with landing issues throughout the campaign, Shami showcased remarkable resilience and dedication on the field.

Regrettably, this recent surgery is anticipated to sideline Shami for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The setback is particularly impactful for the Gujarat Titans, where Shami has played a pivotal role in leading the pace attack. In the preceding IPL seasons, he made significant contributions, amassing 20 wickets in 2022 and an impressive 28 wickets in 2023 with an average of 18.64. Shami’s absence is expected to influence the team’s strategy and performance in the forthcoming IPL season.

The cricket star, absent from a recent series due to tendon issues, acknowledges the time required for rehabilitation. Unfortunately, Shami’s recovery rules him out of the upcoming IPL 2024, impacting the Gujarat Titans’ pace attack and strategic plans for the season but the good news is he is expected to recover before the start of the World Cup which is going to be played in West Indies and USA.
