The Indian cricket team completed a 3-0 T20I series whitewash over Sri Lanka on Sunday (February 27) with a six-wicket win in the third T20I.
The Indian cricket team equalled a unique record on Sunday, after completing a 3-0 T20I series whitewash over Sri Lanka.
A third Shreyas Iyer half-century in as many matches saw the team win the series without breaking a sweat. But it also saw the team become joint-holders of a certain record.
The record in question? India have now won the joint-most consecutive matches in men’s T20I history having put up 12 straight wins on the board.
They also share the record with Afghanistan and Romania. Afghanistan won exactly the same number of T20I matches spanning the years 2018-19.
Romania, who aren’t as active in international cricket as either India or Afghanistan, also notched the same number of wins from 2019-21.
Team | Span | Wins |
Afghanistan | 2018-19 | 12 |
Romania | 2019-21 | 12 |
India | 2021-22 | 12* |
Afghanistan | 2016-17 | 11 |
Uganda | 2021 | 11 |
India have a good chance of being able to break that record and make it their own too. They will next be in T20I action in the month of June when they host South Africa.
That series will consist of 5 T20Is, and the Men in Blue thus only need one more win to make the record their own. Of course, they will target more than just the one win on the trot too.
Shreyas Iyer (73 not out) played the role of a sheet anchor to steer India to 148/4 in 16.5 overs. Thus, they clinched victory by six wickets in the third and final T20I against Sri Lanka at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala on Sunday.
The top-ranked side in the shortest format of the game, thus, completed a 3-0 clean sweep over the visitors. They also extended their winning streak to 12 matches on the trot.
Chasing a decent target of 147 runs, India lost their openers Rohit Sharma (5) and Sanju Samson (18) early.

Incoming batters Iyer and former Baroda captain Deepak Hooda (21) later balanced the innings for the hosts to put them into a commanding position.
Hooda’s 16-ball knock was laced with one boundary and as many hits over the fence. However, following his dismissal, Iyer continued to steer the ship for the hosts.
He notched up nine boundaries and also one six in his 45-ball unbeaten knock. The current KKR skipper also notched up the unbeaten scores of 74 and 57 in his previous matches.
Thus, they overcame the target with relative ease.
