India is set to lock horns with Australia in their tournament opener at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Both the teams look well matched and we are in for a mount water encounter on the 8th of October 2023.

ODI World Cup History of Australia:

Australia boasts a rich history in the ODI World Cups, having participated in all completed editions. They have clinched the coveted trophy five times (in 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2015), a record unmatched by any other team. Additionally, they have finished as runners-up on two occasions (in 1975 and 1996).

ODI World Cup History of India:

India has been a constant presence in all 12 editions of the World Cup thus far. They have been crowned champions twice, with their triumphs coming in 1983 and 2011. India reached the finals in 2003 and has also made it to the semi-finals on four occasions (in 1987, 1996, 2015, and 2019).

Recent Form of India:

India’s recent warm-up matches against the reigning world champions England and the Netherlands ended in washouts. Nevertheless, India’s ODI performance in recent times has been impressive, securing 2-1 series victories against both the West Indies and Australia. Moreover, they clinched victory in the Asia Cup just last month.

Team India appears well-balanced on paper, and they will be eager to make an early statement in the tournament. India’s prospects heavily rely on the spin trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravindra Jadeja, particularly on pitches that traditionally favor spin bowlers. Suryakumar Yadav, who showcased fine form in the recently-concluded ODIs against Australia, could potentially earn a spot in the playing XI due to his ability to play both classical and unconventional shots.

Recent Form of Australia:

Australia faced setbacks in two consecutive ODI series last month, losing 2-3 against South Africa and 1-2 against India. However, they regained momentum with convincing performances in warm-up matches against the Netherlands and Pakistan. Australia boasts a formidable pace attack featuring Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood, along with the spin prowess of Adam Zampa. This formidable bowling lineup has the potential to dismantle even the strongest batting lineups.

In the batting department, Australia possesses top-class openers in David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, both known for their prowess in the 50-over format. The middle order comprises Cameron Green, Marnus Labuschagne (replacing the injured Ashton Agar), Alex Carey, and Glenn Maxwell.

Australia is leaving no stone unturned in preparing their batters to counter India’s spin trio, utilizing local spinners to fine-tune their skills.
