India secures second place in WTC standings with a huge win over England in Ranchi

Having previously reached the WTC final in both cycles, India now possesses a favourable opportunity to fortify their second position further by aiming for victory in the upcoming fifth and final Test in Dharamsala, commencing on March 7.

India cements its hold on the second position in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings with a commanding five-wicket triumph over England in the fourth Test at Ranchi on Monday. Guided by the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the hosts established a 3-1 lead in the ongoing five-Test series. Following this hard-earned victory, India’s point percentage surged impressively from 59.52% to 64.58%, creating a notable gap between them and Australia (55%) and Bangladesh (50%), the third and fourth-ranked teams.

Meanwhile, England finds themselves in the eighth position with 19.44%, just ahead of the bottom-placed Sri Lanka, who are yet to make any points. In the current WTC cycle, India has participated in eight Tests, securing victories in five, facing defeat in two, and drawing one match. England’s distinctive ‘Bazball’ approach has not yielded substantial results, with the visitors claiming victories in three matches, suffering defeats in five, and settling for a draw in one.

At the summit of the standings, New Zealand leads with an impressive 75 percentage points, having played only four Tests thus far. The points system allocates 12 points for a win, six for a tie, and four for a draw, determining team rankings based on the percentage of points. The top two teams will progress to the final at Lord’s in 2025.

India came close to winning the WTC last time around but unfortunately lost to New Zealand in the final, Team India will look to turn things around this time and become the World Test Champions. Virat Kohli was missing in this series due to the birth of his 2nd son, he will likely return to the side for the next Test series India plays.
