Day 1 of the ICC WTC Final (World Test Championship) was a complete washout. Rain played a spoilsport. The day was called off without a single ball being bowled. This raises the age-old question of ‘What happens now?’ ICC’s provision to add an extra day is the answer to the question. It is called Reserved Day.

Rain has been spoiling the match since the first day itself and the additional day has been added. With two days out of five getting abandoned due to rain, it had become inevitable that the entire reserve day will have to be used.

“The Reserve Day has been scheduled to ensure five full days of play. And it will only be used if lost playing time cannot be recovered through the normal provisions of making up lost time each day. There will be no additional day’s play if a positive result is not achieved after five full days of play. And the match will be declared a draw in such a scenario,” the ICC release on the playing conditions read.

ICC WTC Final: Has this happened before?

As a matter of fact, India’s last ICC meeting against New Zealand– 2019 World Cup semifinal had entered reserve day. It was termed as a Two-Day International by Economic Times.

Given the weather report, the match entered the Reserved Day and will be played. The one-off match between India and New Zealand marks the end of two-year-cyle of the inaugural World Test Championship. It was launched in 2019 to help the growth and development of Test cricket. The popularity of Test cricket was faced with the decline due to the immense popularity of T20.

Virat Kohli-led India and Kane Williamson’s New Zealand will aim to win the inaugural WTC title when they take the field. If the match ends in a tie, then both the teams will be announced combined winners.
