India is on the cusp of breaking their 14-year jinx in Tests in England after winning the Oval Test. Virat Kohli’s team is now one match away from overcoming their pain in England. However, they will not have enough time to revel in the glory. Immediately after the end of the Tests, there is non-stop Twenty20 International action for close to two months. From September 19 till October, there will be the resumption of IPL 2021. After the end of the IPL, there will be the ICC World T20 2021 that will take place in the UAE.

The selection of the Indian cricket team for the ICC World T20 is expected to be done on Wednesday. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has given a deadline of September 10 but the BCCI have apparently decided that they will select the team once the fourth Test at The Oval ends. With India emerging victorious and with just three days of a gap for the Manchester Test, a decision could be expected soon.

What does the Indian cricket team need?

The India limited-overs side has got enough match-winners that select themselves. What the team might probably want to zero in on is another spinner in their team. Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Shikhar Dhawan select themselves along with Virat Kohli. Hardik Pandya will be the gun all-rounder. Yuzvendra Chahal will be the front-line spinner while Jasprit Bumrah, Deepak Chahar, and Mohammed Shami might all come back in the fold.

Rishabh Pant will be the de facto keeper while Ishan Kishan might be the backup. Suryakumar Yadav could make his foray into the Indian team as the No.5 batsman. However, India will be wanting some more options in the bowling department.

The toss-up could happen between Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy. With Washington Sundar set to miss the IPL due to a finger injury, his chances of participating in the World T20 is slim. If he passes a fitness test, he would have not had enough match-time.

Who can be in the 15-man squad?

When the Indian side went to Sri Lanka, the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Chahar impressed. In the IPL, the players who have been selected might be aiming to put on a great show. Prithvi Shaw has been out of the Indian side for some time. With the opening and middle-order slot fixed, it is difficult for Shaw to break in the side.

Shreyas Iyer, who was the de facto No.3 for India in ODIs and T20Is, suffered a dislocated shoulder which has seen him out of action for over six months. Iyer will come back to the Delhi Capitals side but his chances appear low. The reserve bench strength is also incredibly strong, with Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar, T Natarajan, and Axar Patel all in the mix.

The Indian contingent is the strongest in the ICC World T20. They will have enough time to acclimatize to the conditions in the UAE thanks to the IPL. India, who have not won the ICC World T20 since 2007, will be aiming to break their 14-year jinx in this tournament as well. They have reached the final in 2014 but lost in the semi-final at home in 2016.

India’s potential ICC World T20 2021 squad

1. Rohit Sharma, 2. Shikhar Dhawan, 3. Virat Kohli (Captain), 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5, KL Rahul, 6. Rishabh Pant (wk), 7. Hardik Pandya, 8. Ravindra Jadeja, 9. Shardul Thakur, 10. Yuzvendra Chahal, 11.
