The International Cricket Committee (ICC) is set to decide the process of its chairman election, or re-election in the board meeting, later this week, as per a report in Cricbuzz.

There are clouds of uncertainty over incumbent chairman Greg Barclay as to whether he should continue over the position or not. There are conflicting reports over his current stand with no clear details. However, as per the ICC constitution, he is eligible to contest two more times.

ICC Chairman: BCCI will rally behind Anurag Thakur for the position

It is understood that the Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) will strongly rally behind the current Sports, Youth Affairs and Minister of Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur for the position of the ICC Chairman.

Thakur had previously served as a Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs and was the president of the BCCI from May 2015 to February 2017. He is eligible to contest in the elections like former presidents Sharad Pawar to N Srinivasan.

The current BCCI office-bearers Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah are eligible too. It should be noted that Shah attended an ICC board meeting last year and has the required qualification for the position now.
According to the report, Thakur’s name was discussed during the internal BCCI discussions recently. He is not qualified to hold a position in the BCCI, as per the Lodha reforms, but he is very much eligible to be the head of the ICC.

The BCCI, the richest cricket board in the world, will have its say over the election or re-election process. It should also be noted that the Indian cricket officials have a very good relationship with Barclay and it is unlikely that the BCCI will do anything to alter the current arrangement.
