Commonwealth Games 2022: India name 15-member squad Birmingham 2022 CWG

Harmanpreet Kaur will lead India’s 15-strong squad for the Commonwealth Games 2022, the Board of Control For Cricket in India announced in an official statement. Veteran India opener Smriti Mandhana has been name as her deputy while regulars like Shafali Verma, spinners Sneh Rana and Rajeshwari Gayakwad, all-rounders Deepti Sharma and Pooja Vastrakar and wicketkeeper-batter Taniya Bhatia have also been named in the squad.

Batters Jemimah Rodrigues and Sabbhineni Meghana, as well as pacer Meghna Singh also find a place in the squad. Simran Dil Bahadur, Richa Ghosh and Poonam Yadav have been named as the reserves, according to an official media release from ICC. India have been grouped with Australia, Barbados and Pakistan in the eight-team tournament. The top two teams from each group will face-off in the semis.

India will open their campaign against Australia on 29 July and will face off against Pakistan on July 31. They will play their final group game against Barbados on 3 August. All three fixtures will be played in Edgbaston, Birmingham. It will be the first edition of the CWG which will feature the Women’s T20 event.

Commonwealth Games 2022: Cricket event to get underway from July 29

The Women’s T20 will be a part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG). The event is scheduled to get underway at the Edgbaston Stadium from July 29, with the bronze and gold medal matches taking place on August 7. India will take on Australia in the inaugural contest with Pakistan taking on Barbados later. Barbados were confirmed as the team from the West Indies that will take part in the Commonwealth Games. 

Hosts England will begin their campaign on July 30. They will take on the winner of a qualifying tournament which is due to take place at the start of 2022. England are later scheduled to play South Africa on August 2 and New Zealand on 4th. The much-awaited India vs Pakistan match will take place on July 31 and Australia will also take on Pakistan on August 3.
