Australia vs South Africa, 2nd Test, Day 3: Talking Points

Australia and South Africa locked horns on day 3 of the 2nd test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Australia has a lead of 1-0 in the series and the 3rd day of the 2nd test was action-packed with some entertaining cricket witnessed but the rain played spoilsport. Pat Cummins put South Africa in after winning the toss which proved to be the right move, as they dismissed South Africa on a lowish score and piled on a huge lead. Early stumps was called as the rain had the final say in the final session of Day 3. Let’s have a look at some of the talking points of the day.

South Africa start brilliantly in the 1st session on Day 3

Australia started the day at 386/3 with a lead of 197 runs with Travis Head on 48* and Alex Carey on 9* at the crease. The Proteas started well, Head got to his 50 but was dismissed on 51 when the score was 395. Anirch Nortje 2 wickets in 2 balls. It was the Alex Carey show today as he scored his maiden Test ton. Carey scored 111 off  149 balls. Cameron Green scored a gritty 51* and stayed unbeaten till the end. Australia declared their innings with 575/8 on the board after 145 overs with 23 extras given by the fielding side.

Australia strike early

South Africa came in to bat under gloomy overcast conditions and lost their skipper, Dean Elgar for a duck. Theunis de Bruyn was dropped by David Warner early on in his innings, the play was stopped due to rain and Sarel Erwee is batting on 7* off 21 balls while Theunis de Bruyn is lucky to be there on 6* off 18 balls as South Africa reached 15/1 after 7 overs. South Africa trails by 371 runs with 9 wickets in hand, it looks like a herculean task from here to win the match with two days still remaining in the match.
