Dan Christian, a multiple T20 winner, will retire at the end of the Big Bash League season. The 39-year-old announced on Saturday (January 21) morning that he has already informed his Sydney Sixers teammates of his choice. Christian, 39, has currently played 405 T20s, scoring 5809 runs and collecting 280 wickets. He will play at least four more games, with the Sixers guaranteed two chances to reach the BBL final if they finish in the top two in the regular season.

“Yesterday at training I was told by Sydney Sixers teammates that I’ll be retiring from playing at the end of the BBL season,” Christian posted on Twitter on Saturday morning. “Sydney Smash tonight, followed by our last round game against the Hurricanes, and then the finals. Hopefully, we can go all the way again this season, but regardless, it’s been a great run. I’ve achieved things and made some memories that I could only have dreamt of as a kid. What I didn’t expect to learn as a kid though, is how many people I was going to come in contact with that have had an influence on my career and ended up becoming lifelong friends,” he added. “I’m looking forward to now having the time to catch up with you all and not having to use the excuse: “Sorry, I’ve got cricket.”

T20 winner

Christian has seen a global reputation in the last decade as his career has become more concentrated on T20 cricket. He has won nine domestic T20 titles since 2010, most notably the 2020-21 BBL with Sixers, two years after assisting Melbourne Renegades to the trophy. Christian made 254 runs and grabbed 15 wickets for the Renegades in 2018-19 (including being named player of the match in the low-scoring final) and then struck 272 runs with a strike rate of 182.55 and claimed 15 wickets in 2020-21. His last first-class encounter was in 2018, but he made an unexpected return to Australia’s ODI squad in 2021, when he faced the West Indies in the Caribbean, despite the fact that the side was missing numerous first-choice players owing to Covid limitations. He returned to T20I cricket four years later, playing against the West Indies and Bangladesh before being chosen as a reserve for Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign in 2021.
