Vijender Singh Beniwal was born on 29 October 1985. He is an Indian professional boxer and politician. He became the first boxer from India to win an Olympic medal when he took home the bronze medal in the amateur division at the 2008 Beijing Games. Additionally, he received bronze, silver, and gold medals in the middleweight division at the 2006 and 2014 Commonwealth Games, the 2009 World Championships, and the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
Vijender Singh was born into a Jats family. His mother was a housewife while his father, Mahipal Singh Beniwal, used to drive a bus for the Haryana Roadways. For the benefit of Vijender and his older brother Manoj’s education, his father worked extra shifts to earn overtime pay. Vijender attended Vaish College in Bhiwani for his bachelor’s degree after completing his secondary education there and his primary education in Kaluwas. In 2011.
To improve the standard of living for their impoverished family, Vijender decided to take up boxing. Vijender was inspired to start boxing by his older brother Manoj, who had also boxed in the past. Vijender’s parents chose to not put pressure on him to pursue his education because they believed he had a talent and a love for boxing. Boxing quickly transitioned for Vijender from a hobby and a passion to a profession. In addition to boxing and a part-time job, he tried his hand at modeling to help pay for his training.
Former national boxing champion Jagdish Singh saw potential in him while he was training at the Bhiwani Boxing Club. Vijender’s first achievement was winning a match in the state-level competition. In 1997, Vijender placed second at his first sub-junior nationals, and in 2000, he won his first gold. He won the title of youth boxing champion for all of India in 2003. But the 2003 Afro-Asian Games marked a turning point. Vijender, a junior boxer, competed in the selection trials and was chosen for the competition, where he fought bravely to take home a silver medal.
