Twitter reacts as Nitu Ghanghas and Saweety Boora became Boxing World Champions

Indian boxers Nitu Ghanghas and Saweety Boora made boxing history by taking home the gold medals at the Women's World Boxing Championships held in New Delhi.

Indian boxers Nitu Ghanghas and Saweety Boora made boxing history by taking home the gold medals at the Women’s World Boxing Championships held in New Delhi. With a score of 5-0, Young Nitu defeated Lutsaikhan Altansetseg of Mongolia in the 48 kg division before a crowded arena that also included Olympics 2008 bronze medal winner Vijender Singh. Then, it was the turn of seasoned boxer Saweety. She did it in style by winning the gold medal victory over Wang Lina of China in the 81kg division, the host country now has two gold medals.

Highlights from Nitu Ghanghas’ final match

Nitu Ghanghas, who is from Haryana’s Bhiwani, won the minimum weight category (48kg) at the World Championships 2023 after getting past Mongolia’s Lutsaikhan Altansetseg by 5-0. Nitu started aggressively and won the first round 5-0 with a combination of punches, landing jabs and hooks effectively. In the second round, Nitu was given a penalty deduction for clinching towards the end of the second round. But, the 22-year-old still managed to get the second round in her favor by 3-2. In the final round, both boxers were provided a point deduction for clinching. Despite starting from a far range, Nitu soon came back to playing from a close range and claimed India’s first gold medal in this edition.

Highlights from Saweety Boora’s final match

Saweety gave the host country even more joy when she claimed a victory over Wang Lina of China to win the gold medal in the light heavyweight division (75-81 kg). The boxer defeated her Chinese opponent with a fantastic performance, earning a points victory (4-3). Saweety began the first round by keeping her stance till the first minute. She then started to throw fists at her rival. She stuck to her strategy the entire round, taking the opening round 3-2. In Round 2, the Indian boxer waited for an opportunity to attack Wang Lina. The results stayed in Saweety’s favor despite the fact that she got hit by the Chinese rival. In the final round, Wang Lina displayed some comeback, but it wasn’t enough to defeat Saweety.

India at the Women’s World Boxing Championships 2023

India is hosting the Women’s World Boxing Championships 2023 which started on March 16 and will run until March 26, 2023. Besides Nitu Ghanghas and Saweety Boora, the defending World Champion Nikhat Zareen and Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain have made it to the finals of the Women’s World Boxing Championships 2023. India will be hoping to add to more gold medals to the tally through two of their experienced and talented boxers.
