In a thrilling match in the women’s singles Round of 16, an 18-year-old Pune native, Tara Shah, defeated top seed Kirsty Gilmour with a spectacular effort. Tara Shah is a rising Indian badminton talent who has taken the world by surprise after her win over top-ranked player Kirsty Gilmour in the Slovenia Yonex Open. The hour-long contest featured heated rallies as well as performances of talent and grit from both players. Tara used a spectacular mix of endurance and close-net shots. She exuded deceit on the court by playing the shuttle at the last second and employing a short movement with a little backswing. Teenager Tara is hoping that these quick wrist twists will become the pillar of her game. She learned the tricks and trade of the game from her Danish coach Peter Gade, who was well-known for these.

Tara Shah eventually prevailed in the match with a total score of 17-21, 22-20, and 21-14, earning a place in the quarterfinals. Shah’s victory over Gilmour, who is ranked 33rd in the world right now, was a great outcome for Indian badminton. Shah demonstrated her ability and tenacity as a qualifier by defeating a challenging foe in three exciting games. Intense back-and-forth exchanges during the game demonstrated the young player’s toughness and capacity to capitalise on key occasions. 

Tara Shah’s rise in the sport

For Tara, her humble beginnings started way back in 2018 when she was awarded the player of the tournament for the Pune District Badminton Championship. Alongside playing in national tournaments, she also went to play in international tournaments. Those tournaments turned out to be a cakewalk for the rising star. When it comes to India, Tara is of the opinion that her hometown Pune is also a very potential to develop talent in the field of badminton than many other districts. “The level of this year’s tournament was very tough. Especially in the girls’ events, most of the players were very good, so it helps you to develop your game while playing against these shuttlers.”

A small steps towards success

For the 18-year-old Indian rising star, the victory over Gilmour was extremely important. Tara, who is ranked at 170 in the BWF world rankings proved her talent and mettle by triumphing over a much more experienced foe. Her victory over Gilmour demonstrates her brilliance and ability to leave a lasting impression on the badminton world. Although she lost to Neslihan Yigit of Turkey in the quarterfinals yet the indomitable fighting spirit of the 18-year-old demonstrated the prowess of India in the badminton world.
