Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap met for the first time in 1997 when they practised together in Hyderabad. The two switched to train under the former All England champion and the current Head National team coach Pullela Gopichand when he opened his badminton academy in 2004. They began dating in the months leading up to the World Junior badminton championships that year.

The relationship with her better half was described by Kashyap as very ‘innocent and genuine’, years later while talking to ESPN. However, there was constant competition and grinding between both of them and a desire to excel each other. This competitive nature helped both of them to grow from strength to strength in their personal life as well as in their professional badminton career. 

Like every other relationship that exists, Saina also has stuck with Kashyap in his dark and difficult times as well. She served as Kashyap’s emotional rock while he dealt with the first of his major muscle injury. The amount of motivation and dedication that she poured during this time, was something that Kashyap has always told it proudly.

Kashyap hails from Hyderabad and is a former World No. 6 and now trains at the Gopichand badminton academy. He was an Arjuna Award recipient in the year 2012. Kashyap created a landmark moment in the history of the Indian badminton fraternity by reaching the quarterfinals of the watershed event. In doing so, he became the first male to reach that level of Olympics. He won the gold medal in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in the category of men’s singles. Kashyap also waved his badminton wand, with the start of a franchise-based badminton tournament- the Premier Badminton League. For the Banga Beats squad in the 2013 Premier Badminton League, Kashyap was named the Icon Player.
