Badminton in the men’s category has always been dominated by players like Lee Chong Wei (Malaysia), and Lin Dan (China). However, the present generation of Indian shuttlers with their dedication and grit have put India as a force to reckon with. Out of these shuttlers, the name of H.S. Prannoy deserves special mention. He cherished the pinnacle of the world badminton rankings when he himself reached the World Ranking of 8 in the BWF World rankings. Prannoy comes from the same badminton academy the Gopichand Badminton Academy which has generated a generation of shuttlers.

The shuttler helped to end China’s dominance in the sport and truly put India on the map. Prannoy came into prominence for the first time in the Boys’ Singles at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics. In 2011, he continued his winning streak with another silver, this time in the Bahrain International Challenge. However, post this Prannoy hit a slump in his career due to a long list of injury issues.

After a few years of unsuccessful attempts on the world stage, Prannoy started to ascend again in the year 2015. He reached the semifinals of the India Open Grand Prix Gold competition and put up a tough fight against Kidambi Srikanth in the competition. The year 2016 started with a rather decent performance from the Indian shuttler.

From 2016 to 2021, Prannoy won accolades and medals at regular intervals on the world stage. He won the US Open (2017), and the Asian Championship (2018). He also notched up significant performances in the Commonwealth Games & Indonesia Open. In 2021, Prannoy hit an all-time low as he exited from both the Swiss Open and All-England Open. He came back strongly later that year to take convincing victories at the Indonesia Masters and BWF World Championships.

Prannoy competed for the Indian squad in the 2022 Thomas Cup. He won the crucial match against Leong Jun Hao of Malaysia in the quarterfinals to secure India’s place in the semifinals and thereby ensuring that India gets its first-ever medal in the Thomas Cup. In the semis, he faced Rasmus Gemke from Denmark. In this pivotal game, he played his heart out to help India move to the final. India ultimately won the Thomas Cup for the first time eventually for the first time ending a tough domination of the Indonesians.
