On September 18, 1989, Ashwini Ponnappa was born in Bangalore, Karnataka. Her father, M.A. Ponnappa, a national hockey player, served as an inspiration to the Kodava woman. After a disappointing showing at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Ashwini Ponnappa and Gutta decided to part ways. Then, in women’s doubles and mixed doubles, she partnered with N. Sikki Reddy and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy. Ashwini Ponnappa was raised in a family that valued sports and had encouraging parents.
After she and Jwala Gutta won gold in the doubles competition at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Ponnappa rose to prominence as one of India’s most accomplished doubles athletes. When they won a bronze medal at the World Championships in 2011, they also made history by becoming the first Indian pair to take home a medal. Additionally, they qualified for the Olympics in 2012 and 2016 but failed to bring home any medals. When Ashwini Ponnappa qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 with N. Sikki Reddy, she also made history by becoming one of the few Indian athletes to qualify for three consecutive Olympics. Together with Reddy, she also took home a silver medal from the 2018 Commonwealth Games. At the South Asian Games, she came away with three medals. Additionally, she took home a gold medal from the 2017 Asia Mixed Team Championships.
