Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto, India’s women’s doubles team, pulled off a stunning win at the Malaysia Open 2024 on Thursday. They took down the former number-one duo from Japan, Wakana Nagahara and Mayu Matsumoto, with scores of 21-19, 13-21, 21-15. With this victory, the 24th-ranked Indian pair advanced to the quarterfinals, after previously defeating the American team of Allison Lee and Corbett 21-13, 21-16 in the opening round. The match against the Japanese team started close with both teams tied at 6-6 in the first game.

But the Indian pair managed to pull ahead with a small lead of 10-6. Despite some twists where the 9th-ranked Japanese team caught up to 16-16, Ashwini and Tanisha kept their cool and wrapped up the game at 21-19. The second game wasn’t in India’s favor as they couldn’t play their usual aggressive style and slipped up a few times. However, in the third game, it was a different story. Tied at 9-9, the Indian duo stepped up their game, cut down on mistakes, and clinched the match at 21-15.

This win is a big deal, especially since it’s the year to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics, and Ashwini and Tanisha are ranked 24th worldwide. If they can crack the top 15, they’ll be packing their bags for the Olympics. Earlier in the tournament, Kidambi Srikanth also surprised everyone by defeating Jonatan Christie from Indonesia in the men’s singles first round. He’s scheduled to face Ka Long Angus of Chinese Taipei later today.
