On 19th August 2022, the World Athletics announced the qualifying standards for the World Athletics Championships 2023 to be conducted in Budapest, Hungary next year. In a number of events, the World Athletics has raised the qualification standards quite dramatically. The distance events witnessed some of the largest declines. For the 5,000 and 10,000 meters in 2022, the male and female championships standards respectively were 13:13.50 and 27:28.00 for men and 15:10.00 and 31:25.00 for women. For the 2023 World Championships, the automatic standards have become 13:07 and 27:10 for men and 14:57 and 30:40 for women.

The athletes have to produce extraordinary performances to achieve these high qualification standards from July 31, 2022, to July 30, 2023. They can directly qualify by breaching the standards while competing in any event approved by the World Athletics during the designated time frame. They can also compete in the World Championships 2023 based on their world rankings after the conclusion of the qualification season. The number of athletes who qualified directly will determine the number of seats available through rankings.
