World and Olympic champions Armand Duplantis and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone have been chosen as World Athletes of the Year for 2022. McLaughlin-Levrone and Duplantis, who were rising stars award winners just four years before, smashed the world records multiple times this year in their respective sports, with their final record-breaking heroics at the World Athletics Championships Oregon 2022.

McLaughlin-Levrone lowered her world 400m hurdles record by 0.78 seconds, once to 51.41 at the US Championships and then to 50.68 at the World Championships in Oregon. She then anchored the US team to another 4x400m triumph after winning her first individual senior world gold. With her season-opening time of 51.61 in Nashville in early June, she left an impression in the 400-meter hurdles. It was the third-fastest time ever recorded at the time, but the all-time list was quickly revised. At the US Championships at Hayward Field, McLaughlin stormed to victory in the 400-meter hurdles in 51.41, shattering her previous record.

Armand Duplantis set three world records, won two global titles, won 18 of his 19 events, and jumped at least six meters 23 times this year. Duplantis, who is only 23 years old, currently leads all other pole vaulters in the history of the sport in the six-meter clearing. His unbeaten indoor season in 2022 began with a world record of 6.19m in Belgrade. He returned to Belgrade two weeks later for the World Athletics Indoor Championships, where he won gold with 6.20m, breaking his world record.

Duplantis then won the Wanda Diamond League circuit, with a 6.16m vault in Stockholm, the biggest outdoor vault ever. Duplantis easily surpassed the 6.21m world record at the World Championships in Oregon. He defended his European title less than a month later, setting a championship record of 6.06m in a tournament with no misses. The Wanda Diamond League Final victory in Zurich was how he finished off his campaign.
