On May 21, 2023, the capital city of Karnataka will host the 15th edition of the prestigious World 10K Bengaluru. The yearly road race, which debuted in 2008, is a World Athletics Gold Label Race in addition to being an Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS)-approved competition. At the World 10K Bengaluru 2023, more than 27,000 competitors are anticipated to take part. The five different race categories that will be present at the Bengaluru event are World 10k, Open 10K, Majja Run (5.1km), Senior Citizen Run, and Champions with Disability (4.2km). The World 10K Bengaluru’s women’s and men’s course records are held by Irene Cheptai (30:35) and Nicholas Kipkorir Kimeli (27:38), respectively, thanks to their gold-medal winning runs from 2022.

Top Athletes to watch out for

The defending champion Nicholas Kipkorir Kimeli, who won the 2022 competition in a time of 27:38s, will be in charge of the international elite field. Compatriot Rhonex Kipruto, who holds the world record for the men’s 10K road race, will provide the Kenyan with fierce competition. After taking home the bronze in the 10,000m track event at the 2019 World Athletics Championship in Doha, Rhonex Kipruto set a world record time of 26:24s in Valencia (Spain) in January 2020.

Apart from the two Kenyans, the race for the gold medal will feature Ethiopian runners Gemechu Dida, Birhanu Legese (the fourth-fastest male marathoner in the world), Ugandan Stephen Kissa, and Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe. Irene Cheptai, the current champion, will be back to defend her title in the women’s elite field. Dera Dida of Ethiopia, who won silver in the World Cross Country Championships in 2019, and Tsehay Gemechu will present the Kenyan with a formidable challenge.

Indian athletes to watch out for

The World 10K Bengaluru 2023 will feature several top Indian and international runners. The reigning champion, Abhishek Pal, will be the star of the Indian elite challenge. Compatriots Kartik Kumar and Gulveer Singh, who both placed third last year, will give the Indian runner, who won the 2022 edition with a time of 30:05, a tough fight. Nitendra Singh Rawat and T Gopi, two Indian Olympians, will also compete. Sanjivani Jadhav, one of the female Indian winners in 2018 and 2019, will be vying for a third crown. Last year winner Parul Chaudhary, Kavita Yadav and Preenu Yadav, who both placed in the top 10 last year, are additional contenders for the top Indian women’s title.

What is the route for the World 10K Bengaluru 2023? 

The historic Sree Kanteerava Stadium is where the race will start and end. Kasturba Road and the renowned MG Road will be traversed during the World 10K Bengaluru. After that, runners will make a left turn onto Dickenson Road and another left onto Cubbon Road. St. Mark’s Road and Queens Road will be crossed by the runners before they make a left onto Dr. Ambedkar Road. Runners will turn back onto Kasturba Road at Corporation Circle and complete their journey there. The runners will pass by some of Bengaluru’s most significant landmarks, such as Vidhana Soudha and the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Boomerang-like is how the course is shaped.
