Soufiane El Bakkali is a Moroccan track and field athlete who specializes in the 3000m steeplechase. He finished fourth at the Rio Olympics in 2016 before winning the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2020. El Bakkali has won three medals at the World Athletics Championships. Additionally, he placed second at the African Championships in 2018 and third at the African Games in 2019. El Bakkali also clinched the title in his specialist event, 3000m steeplechase, at the Diamond League 2022. His personal best is 7:58.15 secs which he achieved in the year 2018.

At the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on July 18, 2022, El Bakkali claimed the gold medal in the 3000 m steeplechase. He accomplished this by finishing ahead of Lamecha Girma and Conseslus Kipruto who completed the race in 8:26.01 and 8:27.92. Before that, he had won the silver and bronze medals respectively at the worlds, in London 2017 and Doha 2019. As a result of this, he currently holds both Olympics and World titles at the same time.
At the Diamond League final in Zürich in September 2022, he earned his first Diamond Trophy. He finished off a great campaign three days later by setting an African record in the 2000-meter steeplechase at the Hanekovi Memorial in Zagreb. He finished in a time of 5:14.06, moving up to third on the all-time world list. Due to a phenomenal 2022 season, he was awarded with the Best African Male Athlete of the Year award by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), the continental association for the sport of Athletics in Africa.
