Soufiane El Bakkali is a Moroccan male runner who specializes in the steeplechase over 3000 meters. He placed fourth in the 2016 Rio Olympics before becoming the Summer Olympics champion in Tokyo 2020. El Bakkali earned gold at the World Athletics Championships in 2022, silver in 2017 and bronze in 2019. He also finished third at the African Games in 2019 and second at the African Championships in 2018. At the 2022 Diamond League, El Bakkali also won the title in his specialty event.
El Bakkali claimed the gold medal in the 3000 m steeplechase on July 18, 2022, at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon. He did it by finishing ahead of Lamecha Girma (8:26.01) and Conseslus Kipruto (8:27.92). In the history of the world championships, he previously won the silver medal in London in 2017 and the bronze medal in Doha in 2019. He won his first Diamond Trophy in September at the Diamond League final in Zürich. Three days later, he completed a strong campaign by setting an African record in the 2000-meter steeplechase at the Hanekovi Memorial in Zagreb, clocking a time of 5:14.06 to climb to third place on the all-time global list.
The 3,000-meter steeplechase specialist, El Bakkali, was also recognized as the best African male athlete of the year in December 2022 by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA). He was chosen ahead of 800 m world champion Emmanuel Korir and marathon world record holder Eliud Kipchoge.
