Born on December 12, 1990, Sisay Lemma Kasaye, known as Sisay Lemma, is an Ethiopian athlete specializing in long-distance running. His athletics career, which began at 17, saw him facing the challenge of running barefoot. Lemma’s first victory came in 2012 when he won the Maratona d’Italia. This was followed by a fifth-place finish at the Tiberias Marathon in 2013, a victory in the Orlen Warsaw Marathon, and a fourth-place finish at the Eindhoven Marathon.
The year 2015 began with a fifth-place finish at the Dubai Marathon in January, clocking 2:07:06. He then claimed victories at the Vienna City Marathon in April with a time of 2:07:31 and the Frankfurt Marathon in October, where he established a new personal best of 2:06:26. His performance at the Dubai Marathon in 2016 witnessed him finishing fourth with an improved personal best of 2:05:16. In 2017, Lemma secured third place at the Dubai Marathon in January, fourth at the Chicago Marathon in October.
In 2018, Sisay Lemma ran a personal best of 2:04:08 at the Dubai Marathon, achieving fifth place on January 26. He then attained a record at the Ljubljana Marathon in October with a timing of 2:04:58. At the Berlin Marathon in 2019, he improved his personal best to 2:03:36, finishing third. Lemma continued his strong performances into 2020, finishing third at both the Tokyo Marathon in March and the London Marathon, with times of 2:04:51 and 2:05:45, respectively.
Sisay Lemma’s significant moment came in 2021 when he clinched the main title at the London Marathon with a timing of 2:04:01. At the recently concluded Valencia Marathon 2023, Lemma shattered the course record, clocking a personal best of 2:01:48. In addition to his marathon achievements, Lemma recorded a personal best in the half marathon of 1:02:06 in May 2015 in Göteborg. This timing moved him to the fourth place on the marathon all-time list.
