Ryan Crouser is a shot putter and discus thrower from the United States. He holds the Olympic record and is a two-time gold medal winner at the Olympics in the shot put. Crouser currently holds both the indoor and outdoor shot put world records. At the U.S. Olympic Trials on June 18, 2021, he broke Randy Barnes’ 31-year-old record of 23.12 m by almost 10 inches with a throw of 23.37 m on his fourth attempt. The current reigning two-time Olympic champion is Crouser. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, he won gold in the shot put, setting an Olympic Games record of 22.52 meters. The Olympic record was raised to 23.30 m when he successfully defended his Olympic crown in Tokyo in 2020.
Crouser was selected as the World Male Athlete of the Year 2021 by Track & Field News. He received the Jesse Owens Award, the highest honor given by USA Track & Field, and he was a finalist for 2021 Male Track and Field World Athlete of the Year by World Athletics, the organization that oversees track and field internationally. Crouser had also thrown 22 m or more about 163 times by the end of the 2021 season, the most in history of Athletics.
He has won the USA national outdoor shot put championship four times, in 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2021. In 2020, the championship didn’t take place due to Covid-19. He has won the title of 2019 and 2020 USA National Indoor Shot Put Champion twice. He has won both indoor and outdoor shot put NCAA championships for the University of Texas on four occasions. At the 2009 World Youth Championships, he had previously clinched the gold medal in the boys’ shot put event.
