Paul Tergat, a former world marathon record holder, was born on June 17, 1969 in Kabarnet, Baringo in Kenya. Tergat played basketball before he became an athlete. The Kenyan Cross Country Championships victory, however, marked the start of his extraordinary career in 1992. However, due to his injuries, he was forced to skip the World Championships. From 1995 to 1999, Tergat claimed a remarkable five consecutive IAAF (now World Athletics) World Cross Country championships. On the track competitions, he earned two 10,000-meter silver medals at the World Championships in 1997 and 1999 and two Olympic silver medals in 1996 and 2000.
Furthermore, Tergat won the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in 1999 and 2000 in back-to-back editions. He ran a fantastic 2:04:55 in September 2003 to smash the marathon world record in Berlin. He competed in the marathon at the Athens Olympics for the first time and placed ninth. Since January 2004, he has served as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations’ World Food Program. He was chosen by New York Road Runners to receive the 2010 Abebe Bikila Award in honour of his long-distance accomplishments, making him the first Kenyan man to achieve this feat.
He focused solely on the marathon toward the conclusion of his career. On September 28, 2003, at the Berlin Marathon, he set the world record for the distance with a timing of 2:04:55. On September 30, 2007, Ethiopian distance runner Haile Gebrselassie completed the Berlin Marathon in 2:04:26, shattering Tergat’s previous record of 2:04.55. He indicated an interest in competing in the 2008 Olympics but was not chosen to represent Kenya. Later that year, he placed fourth in the New York Marathon.
