Letesenbet Gidey is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who is the reigning 10,000 m world champion as well as the Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist in this event. On October 7, 2020, she broke Tirunesh Dibaba’s 12-year-old record of 14:11.15 seconds set on June 6, 2008 in Oslo by winning the women’s 5,000-meter race in Valencia, Spain, in a time of 14:06.62 seconds. On October 24, 2021, Letesenbet became the first woman to run under 64 minutes (legally) and under 63 minutes when she finished her first half marathon in 62 minutes and 52 seconds (1:02.52 secs) at the Valencia Half Marathon. She also holds the world record for the 10,000 meters, which she set at Hengelo in 2021.
