Ethiopian-born athlete Letesenbet Gidey is the current world champion in the 10,000 m and the Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist in the same event. She set a new 14 minutes 6.62 seconds women’s 5,000m world record in Valencia, Spain on October 7, 2020, breaking Tirunesh Dibaba’s 12-year-old record of 14 minutes 11.15 seconds set on June 6, 2008, in Oslo. She also owns the world records for the 10,000-meter and half-marathon distances. Letesenbet became the first woman to run under 64 minutes (legally) and under 63 minutes on October 24, 2021, when she competed in her first half marathon, finishing in 62 minutes and 52 seconds (1:02.52 secs) at the Valencia Half Marathon. In 2015 and 2017, she was also the U20 Cross Country World Champion.

Letesenbet Gidey’s parents had four children, Letesenbet being the youngest. She has two brothers and a sister. They are four siblings in total. Letesenbet Gidey grew up on the family farm in Endameskel, a charming community surrounded by nature. She received her elementary education at a community college in Endameskel, Tigray, Ethiopia. In the initial phase of her life, Gidey was not actually into racing. In an interview, she revealed the key to her success is to maintain her concentration and performance. She expressed that she always runs for her nation out of a great feeling of patriotism and love.

Letesenbet Gidey was suspended from her school in 2011 because she refused to run in physical education sessions. Her teacher encouraged her to sign up for the major races in 2011 as a requirement for Gidey to be allowed back in the classroom once she completes the race. Since Letesenbet was passionate about education, she was ready to do anything to get back into the school. In fact, she won the 3000 m and 2000 m steeplechase run at the Ethiopian School Championships in Shashemane, Tigray in 2012. She was subsequently allowed to return to the school to finish her studies.
