Joseph Mathias Kovacs, popularly known as Joe Kovacs, was born in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, on June 28, 1989. Joe was a discus and shot put champion in high school, from which he graduated in 2007. He also wrote history for the Bethlehem Catholic, earning two gold medals. He earned gold in the discus and shot throw at the PIAA championships during his senior year of high school track & field. His winning distance of 64 feet, 10.75 inches (19.7803 meters) is a PIAA Class AA state record.  He attended the Penn State University. He majored in Earth Science and Finance and received his degree in 2011. As a university student, he envisioned himself in either of these two fields, but not shot putting. Joe was a four-time All-American in college.

Joe represented the United States at the 2012 Olympic Trials while wearing a Penn State jersey. Despite throwing a personal best and placing fourth, he was unable to make the squad. Joe first met renowned coach Art Venegas in late 2012 and started training under him. Joe improved with Art’s help, increasing his personal record from 69 feet to 74 feet. Joey later went on to triumph at the 2015 World Championships. He also won the 2015 Diamond League Championship. Joe also won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2017 IAAF World Championship. He is the second-best athlete of all time in the shot put with a personal best of 23.23 meters.

Ashley Muffet was born on September 16, 1986. She is a graduate from the Hoover High School. She was a three-time state champion and state record-holder at Hoover after her own remarkable throwing career, and a four-time All-American in college at Kentucky. Muffet rapidly achieved success as a coach and is a three-time regional coach of the year. She has worked as a coach at Ohio State, Murray State, and Western Kentucky before spending the last seven years in Columbus. She has since transferred from Ohio State to Vanderbilt. Muffet was named as the Vanderbilt women’s track and field program’s assistant head coach and throws coach last month. Kovacs has trained a world champion, three NCAA champions, 17 All-Americans, 24 conference champions, 31 NCAA appearances, three regional Athlete of the Year awards, six top-3 NCAA finishes, and ten conference championship teams.

Muffet coached throws and was the recruiting coordinator at Ohio State for seven years. She guided two national champions to three NCAA championships, 15 Big Ten champions, 24 top-3 conference finishes, four conference record holders, four Big Ten Athletes of the Year, and four more to conference championship Athlete of the Meet accolades. She coached Adelaide Aquilla, the most recent NCAA champion, who went from being a stand to winning both the indoor and outdoor shot put championships this past year, ranking No. 4 all-time in NCAA history, and earning a position on the U.S. Olympic Team.
