Dutee Chand was born on February 3, 1996, to Chakradhar Chand and Akhuji Chand in the Odisha village of Chaka Gopalpur in the Jajpur district. She comes from a weaving family that lives below the poverty line. Saraswati Chand, her older sister, is her role model and a state-level runner. In 2006, Chand and her older sister Saraswati enrolled in a public sports hostel. Dutee Chand won the under-18 division national championship in 2012 after clocking 11:85 in the 100-meter race.
Chand finished third in the women’s 200-meter race at the 2013 Asian Athletics Championships in Pune with a time of 23:81. She also made history in 2013 when, at the World Youth Championships, she became the first Indian to advance to the 100-meter final of a major international athletics competition. She won the 100-meter and 200-meter national championships in the same year, clocking 11.73 seconds in the finals of the 100-meter and 23.73 seconds in the 200-meter events, respectively, at the National Senior Athletics Championships in Ranchi. Chand won two bronze medals in 2017, one in the women’s 100-meter event and the other in the women’s 4×100-meter relay with Srabani Nanda, Merlin K Joseph, and Himashree Roy in Bhubaneswar at the Asian Athletics Championships.
Chand recorded a time of 11:32 seconds to take home the silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games in the women’s 100-meter finals. This was Chand’s first medal at an Asian Games. On August 29, in the Women’s 200-meter final, she won her second silver medal from the Asian Games. After 32 years since India’s silver medal in the 100 m came from her PT Usha won in 1986. Moreover Chand’s silver medal in the 200m comes 16 years after Saraswati Saha’s gold medal in Busan in 2002. Chand became the first Indian woman sprinter to win gold at the Universiade when she won the 100-meter race at the 2019 Summer Universiade in Napoli. In 11:32 seconds, she completed the sprint. She also carried the flag during the event’s opening ceremony.
Dutee Chand is currently dating a girl named Monalisa Das. She claims that the Indian Supreme Court’s decision to decriminalize homosexual sex in 2018 inspired her to speak out about her sexuality, demonstrating that she is in a same-sex relationship. With this, Dutee Chand became the first openly gay Indian athlete after the announcement.

Dutee and Monalisa met each other in 2017. Both Dutee Chand and her girlfriend Monalisa Das are natives of the Odisha’s village, Chakagopal. A Khudurkuni puja was taking place in her village when she first met the athlete, and they exchanged their phone numbers. Not much is known about Monalisa’s profession. However, in a recent interview with India Today, Dutee stated that the couple will definitely get married in the future but right now, she is focusing on her career. She further stated that she (Dutee) wanted to be the father while Monalisa would be the mother when they have a child.
