Yelena Gadzhievna Isinbayeva was born in Volgograd, Russia, on June 3, 1982. She was born in Volgograd to a Tabasaran father and a Russian mother. From the age of five to fifteen, Isinbayeva trained as a gymnast. After growing to a height of 1.74 meters, she eventually gave up the sport because she was deemed to be too tall to compete in gymnastics. She won her first significant victory at the 1998 World Youth Games in Moscow, Russia, at the age of 16, six months after taking up the sport, with a height of 4.00 m which was her third sports competition in this discipline.
Since her breakthrough in 2004, Yelena has established an astonishing 27 world records (15 outdoor and 12 indoor) and won nine consecutive gold medals in indoor and outdoor competitions. She was the first woman to clear the historic 5-meter pole vault barrier on July 22, 2005. Yelena’s current world records are 5.06m outdoors, which she set on August 28, 2009, at the IAAF Golden League in Zurich, Switzerland, and 5.00m indoors, which she set on February 15, 2009, at the Donetsk indoor tournament.
She currently holds the record for the competition and is regarded as the greatest female pole vaulter of all time. Isinbayeva was elected IAAF Female Athlete of the Year in 2004, 2005, and 2008, and Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year in 2007 and 2009. She was inducted into the FICTS “Hall of Fame” in 2007 and received the “Excellence Guirlande D’Honneur” award. In 2009, she received the Prince of Asturias Award for Sports. She is among the ten athletes in the world to have won world championships at the youth, junior, and senior levels of an athletic event which comprises the likes of Valerie Adams, Usain Bolt, Veronica Campbell-Brown, Jacques Freitag, and Kirani James.
