Yelena Gadzhievna Isinbayeva, popularly known as Yelena Isinbayeva, is a former pole vaulter who was born on June 3, 1982, in Volgograd, Russia. She is regarded as the greatest female pole vaulter of all time and has won two gold medals at the Olympics (in 2004 and 2008), and three World Championships (in 2005, 2007, and 2013), and holds the current record in the discipline. She has won nine major championships which include the Olympics, World outdoor and indoor competitions, and European outdoor and indoor tournaments. She also won the IAAF Golden League jackpot in the years 2007 and 2009.
In March 2003, Isinbayeva defeated reigning world champion Svetlana Feofanova of Russia for the first time. That July, she broke American Stacy Dragila’s world record with a 4.82-meter vault and went on to win two more big athletics meets against Feofanova and Dragila. Isinbayeva then came in third in the 2003 International Association of Athletics Federations, IAAF, (presently known as World Athletics) world championships. However, in the 2004 global indoor championships, she regained control, set an indoor world record, and won the title.
With a vault of 4.85m on Monday, August 18, the Russian successfully defended the Olympic title she won in Athens in 2004. She was the only vaulter still competing at that time, although she was far from done. She first cleared 4.95m to break her own Olympic mark before requesting that the bar be lifted once more to 5.05m as she started a quest for the world record. She was able to clear the bar at 5.05m on the third attempt as the crowd went berserk. She then established a new world record for women’s pole vault at 5.06 meters in the IAAF Golden League in August 2009.
