Thomas Röhler is a javelin thrower who represents Germany in international competitions. He clinched the gold medal at the Summer Olympics 2016 held in Rio de Janeiro in the men’s javelin throw event. He threw the javelin to a distance of 90.30 m, which also remains as the second-best distance in the Olympics, behind Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen throw of 90.57 set during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Besides this, he is also the 2018 European Champion with a throw of 89.47 m. His best finish at the World Championships was the fourth place finish in London 2017, with a best effort of 88.26 m.

Thomas was born on September 30, 1991, in Jena Thuringia in Germany. He attended the Johann Chr. Fr. Guts Muths Sports, a high school in Jena. He was first included to the German National team in 2010. As a result, he started representing the country in national and international competitions. In 2011, he earned the Pierre de Coubertin award, a prominent prize given to secondary school students who display ideals aligned with the Olympic Movement by participating in sports. He got his Bachelor’s degree in 2016 and studied Masters’ at the Friedrich-Schiller-University in Jena. He became a member of the IAAF (now World Athletics) Athletes’ Commission in 2018.
