Eliud Kipchoge

Eliud Kipchoge is a Kenyan long-distance runner who originally excelled in the 5000-metre event and now competes in the marathon. He is widely recognized as the best marathon runner of all time, having won the 2016 and 2020 Olympic marathons and holding the marathon world record with a time of 2:01:09 achieved at the Berlin Marathon 2022.  He has completed four of the world's top six quickest marathons. He conquered each of the ten marathons he competed in between 2014 and 2019.

Junior Career

In 2002, he won the Kenyan trials that took place for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships junior race.  Kipchoge ran in the Kenyan junior team that won gold in the World Cross Country Championships, which were held in Dublin, and finished fifth in the individual race. In addition, he took first place in the 5000-meter event at the Kenyan trial for the World Junior Championships 2002in Athletics. Unfortunately, he was unable to compete, however, due to illness. He claimed the junior race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 2003. In the same year at the Bislett Games 2003, he ran the 5000 meters with a timing of 12:52.61 seconds, thus breaking the world junior record. Until 2012, this was the junior record for both the world and Africa.

Senior Career

At the age of eighteen, Kipchoge set a championship record to become the senior 5000 m world champion at the World Championships 2003. He eventually went on to win Olympic bronze for Kenya in 2004 and a bronze at the World Indoor Championships 2006. Kipchoge who is a five-time finalist in the 5000-meter race at the World Championships won silver medals at the World Championships 2007, Beijing Olympics 2008, and Commonwealth Games 2010.

In 2012, he moved to road running and completed his first half marathon in the second-fastest time ever, i.e., 59:25. He set a course record to win the 2013 Hamburg Marathon in his first marathon. His victory at the Chicago Marathon 2014 was his first triumph in a World Marathon Major and went on to win the series in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022. He has the record for the most London Marathon wins (4) and holds the record for the most Berlin Marathon victories with four, shared with Haile Gebrselassie. Kipchoge is known as the greatest marathoner of all time as he has won a total of 10 titles at the World Marathon Majors. His last victory came at the Berlin Marathon 2022 where he smashed his own world record by 30 seconds, clocking a new timing of 2:01:09 secs.

Kipchoge and Environment

Apart from being the greatest marathon runner of all time, Eliud Kipchoge has always been a vocal environmentalist. He is the founder of ‘Eliud Kipchoge Foundation’, whose focus is on two pillars – Education and Environment. The main goals of the foundation are as follows: (1) Education – Sponsor school fees and to give more children access to education, build libraries, and inspire people through the importance of education and the power of books and (2) Environment – Help to keep forests, to plant trees, to make full use of farms by planting trees and produce good fruit and vegetables, conserve the environment for the next generation, and help make running become a lifestyle for as many people as possible.

Net Worth

Despite having already established himself as a sporting legend, Kipchoge’s earnings are quite decent in comparison to other greatest players of all time. His net worth is reported to be around $3 million and presently earns about $50,000 every event, according to sources. Presently, he has endorsed deals with brands like Nike, Isuzu Car dealers, HFM, and Total Kenya.

Childhood

Eliud Kipchoge was born in Kapsisiywa, Nandi County, Kenya on November 5, 1984. He was raised by a single teaching mother and is the youngest among the four kids. He went to school daily by running three kilometers or two miles. He graduated from Nandi County’s Kaptel Secondary School in 1999, but he did not run actively or professionally at that time.
